Border Patrol Apprehend Man Hiding 400 Pounds of Cocaine in Cucumbers

(NationalUSNews.com) — Authorities in California said they apprehended a Mexican national earlier this month trying to smuggle over 400 lbs of cocaine in cucumber crates.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection stated on September 15 that a man driving a tractor-trailer with a cargo document for cucumbers attempted to enter the country via the southern border.

CBP officials inspecting a shipment of cucumbers at the cargo station at Otay Mesa port of entry found 146 packets of cocaine hidden among the produce. The total weight of the drugs was 401.68 lbs.

Authorities released images of the heroin shipments concealed in cardboard boxes disguised to appear like produce to the media.

Otay Mesa Port Director Rosa Hernandez stated that the influence the CBP agents have on our agency and the greater community goes well beyond the call of duty. The hard work ethic of the officers is on full display in this seizure.

CBP officials at the border intercepted a 25-year-old Mexican male driving a tractor-trailer only three days before the seizure.

Officials inspected the trailer and discovered irregularities in the fuel tank. A material suspected of being liquid methamphetamine was removed by authorities.

The CBP reports that they loaded 22 5-gallon buckets with the contraband, which weighed 663.15 pounds. The combined street value of the drugs from both raids was over five million dollars.

Homeland Security Investigations were given custody of the two Mexican nationals.

A report shows how drug traffickers always develop innovative techniques to conceal their goods.

Cheese is their newest ploy.

Texas CBP agents uncovered 18 lbs. of cocaine concealed behind big wheels of cheese at the Presidio Port of Entry on July 20, 2023.

A pick-up truck crossing into the country from Mexico was sent to an additional inspection station. The X-ray system detected irregularities in the four cheese wheels that the driver had stated. Customs and Border Protection agents found seven bundles of cocaine weighing 17.8 pounds after cutting the cheese.

The truck’s driver, a 22-year-old American citizen, was arrested, and the narcotics were confiscated.
