(NationalUSNews.com) — Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has defended an attack ad covering comments made by Donald Trump in which Trump seemingly supports the LGBTQ community. The ad featured a clip from the 2016 Republican National Convention, in which Donald Trump claimed he would do everything in his power to protect members of the LGBTQ.
Trump’s comments were deemed controversial by more conservative candidates but didn’t prevent him from securing the Republican Party’s nomination for the 2016 presidential election. DeSantis has doubled down on the ad, claiming that his stance on topics like transgender athletes and “gender-affirming care” are clear. DeSantis’ ad has somewhat hindered his campaign, as it lost him the support of other moderate conservatives who are now refusing to support his presidential bid.
DeSantis hasn’t commented on the pushback from his attack ad, which drew comments from Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg, who is gay, and a libertarian journalist who claims to be a Trump voter. DeSantis has remained steadfast in his anti-LGBTQ policies, a decision that could hurt his chances of winning an election against a candidate like Joe Biden. Despite his declining support, DeSantis feels confident that he’s the best candidate for the Republicans to nominate ahead of next year’s presidential election. Although DeSantis hasn’t commented on his loss of support among moderates, he will have to address his ad to gain more popularity ahead of next year’s election. As it stands, DeSantis is the second most popular Republican running for president, but he is still leagues behind the GOP favorite Donald Trump.
The attack ad isn’t the first time DeSantis has established himself as what progressive critics say is an “anti-LGBTQ Republican.” DeSantis is currently engaged in a civil lawsuit with the Disney Corporation regarding his choice to attack them for their “woke” ideological stances. DeSantis has campaigned on what many see as his extreme conservative views regarding controversial topics like transgender policies and LGBTQ movements. This move has likely lessened his popularity amongst moderate voters. DeSantis is unlikely to be the Republican nominee for next year’s election, as he currently trails behind Donald Trump by over twenty points in various polls.
