FBI in Hot Seat for Targeting Catholic Parishes Over Extremism

(NationalUSNews.com) – The House of Representatives has a Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government, and it has expressed deep concerns about President Biden using the Department of Justice to target Catholic entities in an effort to fight extremism in America. The Subcommittee revealed that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has planted sources in Catholic churches to find out information about people within faith groups.

Republican lawmaker Steve Scalise is the Majority Leader in the Louisiana House of Representatives. Scalise and fellow Republican Elise Stefanik of New York blamed the Biden Administration for targeting citizens who might not align their opinions with Democrats and their political viewpoints. Scalise said the use of the Justice Department to spy on citizens is evident and “deeply disturbing.” He spoke to the vulnerability of unsuspecting Americans who deserve accountability from the Federal government.

Calling the move by the FBI an abuse of power, Scalise referenced the First Amendment which grants freedom of religion to all American citizens. Stefanik agreed, labeling the practice as unacceptable. She praised the Subcommittee for bringing a level of transparency to the issue at hand, and for making the Catholic parishes aware of the ways they may have been used by the Biden Administration.

The Subcommittee revealed that the FBI wanted to make faith-based organizations sensitive to signs of extremism and have them report back with any questionable activity. Undercover agents were used, and the FBI planned for them to be involved in community activities with Catholic parishes in order to provide information on unsuspecting worshippers.

The Subcommittee says these actions are illegal and has issued a subpoena to the FBI to get further information. The FBI has responded with plans to comply with Congress, and has also indicated that it will conduct an internal investigation, making it clear that the FBI does not set these kinds of standards, nor does it target citizens based on religious preferences and affiliations.
