Historians Ranked the American Presidents; The Results May Surprise You

(NationalUSNews.com) — Qualtrics, a company that uses AI to conduct surveys and refers to itself as an experience management company, recently asked members of the American Political Science Association, to complete an online survey ranking all of the American presidents in order of greatness. Of the current and recent members of the organization, 154 participated in the survey, where they were asked to give each president a score from 1 to 100, with a score of zero indicating a total failure.

President Abraham Lincoln scored the highest at 95, while America’s founder, George Washington, came in third with a score of 90.32. Franklin Delano Roosevelt took second place. Former president and presumptive Republican nominee for the 2024 presidential election, Donald Trump, took the lowest spot with a score of 10.92, while the second-worst president, James Buchanan, was awarded a 16.71.

While greatness is a subjective measurement, historians and political experts routinely analyze the decisions that have been made by American presidents and the results that have come from them. Political partisanship and changing values may also affect how people judge them. For instance, Roosevelt is often praised for his New Deal but then heavily criticized for the Japanese American internment camps during the Second World War. Washington owned slaves, which made even the visionary who helped create the nation slip down to third place, while Lincoln, the man who ended slavery, ascended to the top of the list.

The survey also broke down rankings by the political leanings of those surveyed. Among those identifying as liberals, Democrats, independents, and moderates, Trump was in last place, while Lincoln was in first place. Conservatives and Republicans agreed that Washington was the greatest but disagreed on where to place Trump. Conservatives placed Trump at 43, while Republicans were more generous and placed him at 41. It may not be too surprising that liberals ranked President Biden at 13 and moderates ranked him at 20, but some may be startled to note that conservatives ranked Biden at 30, a full 13 places ahead of Trump.
