(NationalUSNews.com) — Mike Pence, the former vice president, recently dismissed popular conspiracy theories surrounding the riots on January 6, 2021. The riots began immediately after media outlets reported that President Joe Biden had won the 2020 presidential election, which prompted avid supporters of former President Donald Trump’s administration to take to the Capitol to contest the election results. Immediately after the riots ended, many citizens began speculating that federal agencies like the FBI or the CIA instigated the Capitol riots to incite violence from Donald Trump’s supporters. Some of the rioters also targeted elected officials, including former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Mike Pence.
During an interview with CNN, Pence discussed the Capitol riots and discredited theories about the federal government’s involvement. Pence claims that agencies like the FBI have assured elected officials that the riots didn’t involve any outside influence from federal agents. Pence then discussed his emotional reaction to the January 6 incident as it unfolded, stating that the vandalism of the Capitol “infuriated” him. Although Pence and other officials say that the FBI wasn’t involved in the riots, many American voters aren’t convinced, according to a recent poll.
When asked about the January 6 riots, at least 1/4 of Americans said that the FBI instigated the violence at the Capitol. Additionally, approximately 33% of Republicans believe the FBI influenced the crowd to act violently during the incident. The University of Maryland conducted the poll, likely due to the conspiracy theories surrounding the incident gaining traction on social media. Certain Republican lawmakers also support the conspiracy theory, including Donald Trump, Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, and GOP presidential hopeful Vivek Ramaswamy.
Pence dismissed the conspiracy theory and cautioned Americans who believe it to examine the facts surrounding the Capitol riots. Pence expressly referred to the ongoing effort by the Department of Justice and the FBI to find and convict citizens who illegally entered Congressional buildings and offices during the riot. So far, federal authorities have convicted almost 1,000 people, with 400 serving time for assaulting Capitol Police officers. During the interview, Pence blamed Donald Trump for the January 6, 2021, riots, claiming that Trump acted recklessly by encouraging his supporters to protest in Washington, D.C.
Pence’s interview comes just days after the third anniversary of the Capitol riots and renewed calls for protection by lawmakers who fear violence after the upcoming presidential election.
