Princess Diana’s Gown Fetches a Record-Breaking $1.1 Million at Auction

( — A dress worn by Princess Diana was recently sold at auction for over ten times more than its original estimated price. The dress sold at Julien’s Auctions, based in Hollywood, for $1,148,080. The dress is the most expensive dress owned by Diana, sold at auction, and had an accompanying illustration attached to it during the auction. Diana wore the dress during a visit to Florence, Italy, in 1985, when she joined a royal tour with Prince Charles of Wales. Diana wore the dress again the following year during a visit to the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.

Jakob Schlaepfer, a famous textile icon, provided the fabric used in the dress worn by Diana. Jacques Azagury, a world-renowned fashion designer, designed the dress with shoulder pads, a blue skirt, and a sash and implemented embroidered stars within its design. A design team working with Azagury helped embroider the stars, making the dress a collaborative effort between multiple fashion industry professionals. Azagury designed the dress to represent Diana’s support for ballet, including her regular visits to the English National Ballet in London. According to some sources close to Diana, the late princess loved the art of dance.

The dress is the latest article of clothing originally belonging to Diana to be sold at an auction this year. One of Diana’s other dresses was a 1991 gown designed by Victor Edelstein, which sold for over half a million dollars in January. Edelstein’s dress sold for $604,800, making it Diana’s most expensive dress until the Jacques Azagury dress set the new record.

The dress isn’t the only article of Diana’s clothing featured in the auction, as the Hollywood Legends sale includes the blouse Diana wore during her engagement portrait in 1981. The blouse sold for $381,000. Despite having multiple dresses and blouses worn by Diana, the auction also features clothing that belonged to other world-renowned celebrities, including Audrey Hepburn.

The Hollywood Legends auction included one of Gloria Swanson’s dresses featured in the 1950 noir film Sunset Boulevard and a dress that originally belonged to Audrey Hepburn. Also featured in the Hollywood Legends auction is a sailor dress worn by Barbra Streisand.
