(NationalUSNews.com) — Last week, a baby girl who was abandoned inside a garbage bag outside of a municipal building in Tripoli in northern Lebanon was rescued in part due to a stray dog, the New York Post reported.
According to a report in the National News, the stray had taken hold of the black plastic garbage bag containing the infant and was dragging it away when a passerby who heard the baby’s cries took action. The passerby rushed the infant to the Islamic Hospital which later transferred the child to the Tripoli Government Hospital.
A photo of the infant posted on Twitter shows red bruises and abrasions on her face and body.
Social media users responded to the news with condemnations for the mother and offers to adopt the child.
Lebanese journalist Ghassan Rifi condemned the “wild lady” who abandoned the infant like trash and accused the mother of leaving the baby “so that the dogs would finish her off.”
Rifi added that the stray dog that found the bag “was more humane” than the brutal criminal who threw her away.
According to reports, it is unclear how old the child is, with some accounts suggesting that she is around 4 months old while others suggest that she was abandoned shortly after birth.
Local media reported that the child was in serious but stable condition, according to the New York Post.
Police are searching for whoever abandoned the child.
According to the National News, earlier this month, a 6-year-old girl in Tripoli died after being repeatedly sexually assaulted by her grandfather.
Child abuse and abandonment are rampant in Tripoli where around 80 percent of the population is in poverty.
