(NationalUSNews.com) — A 16-year-old boy died after falling from the balcony of a Royal Caribbean Allure of the Seas cruise ship, with passengers unsure if the boy intentionally fell to his death. After falling from the balcony, the ship’s staff transported the young boy to a hospital, where he died from his injuries. The tragedy occurred moments after the ship began a three-day voyage from Florida to the Bahamas.
Staff from Royal Caribbean addressed the death in a brief statement but didn’t release any details surrounding the event. In the statement, Royal Caribbean did not confirm the boy’s age or disclose any information about the family of the deceased teen. The statement did provide condolences to the boy’s family but refused to elaborate further about the tragedy. According to some passengers, the cruise ship’s staff made an announcement requesting blood donations moments before the teen fell from the balcony.
Shortly after the death, Royal Caribbean cooperated with authorities to isolate the balcony the boy fell from. Passengers took photos of the balcony, which appeared isolated with crime scene tape and blocked off from other parts of the ship. The cause of the boy’s fall is unknown, but some passengers speculate that the fall was intentional due to the balcony’s tall guard rail. Despite the confusion surrounding the tragedy, a spokesperson for Royal Caribbean refused to provide further comment out of respect for the family’s privacy.
Following the boy’s trip, the cruise ship aborted its voyage to the Bahamas and returned to Port Canaveral, Florida, as originally scheduled. Shortly after its return to Florida, The Allure of the Seas began a new four-day voyage from Port Canaveral. Royal Caribbean hosts various three- and four-day-long cruises from Port Canaveral and isn’t halting business despite the teenager’s tragic demise.
According to reports, The Allure of the Sea features over 2,500 staterooms and can host over 6,500 passengers before reaching full capacity. The Allure of the Seas is the fifth-largest cruise ship operating today but not the largest cruise ship owned and operated by Royal Caribbean. Royal Caribbean also owns the largest cruise ship on the planet, the Wonder of the Seas. Royal Caribbean voyages are scheduled to continue for the foreseeable future, and officials for the cruise company aren’t discussing the boy’s death at this time.
