Top Democrat Predicts Disaster If Biden Caves On Key Issue

( — With the ongoing debt ceiling negotiations, some Democratic Party officials are calling for Biden to not compromise with Republicans, in the fear that such compromises could cause backlash from other lawmakers and the public alike. The officials in question are Representative Pramila Jayapal from Washington, and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez from New York. Jayapal claims that should Biden agree to spending caps, a policy that Republicans are heavily in favor of implementing, Biden would be unable to maintain the successes that his administration has achieved so far. Jayapal seems worried that Biden agreeing to these compromises would essentially be in opposition to his stances, and would cause members of the public to protest against the Biden Administration.

Jayapal’s comments serve as the latest example of Biden losing support within his own party, an ongoing trend that could potentially hurt his efforts when he runs for reelection in 2024. Biden has fashioned himself as a progressive since his initial presidential campaign, but he may have to double back on his official stance if he wants to avoid the US defaulting on its national debt on June 1st. Despite this concern, Biden has so far remained adamant about not compromising with Republicans, claiming himself to be “blameless” should the country fail to reach a resolution before the deadline. Despite this seemingly carefree attitude regarding the national debt issue, the Biden Administration does seem worried that the US defaulting would hurt his reelection campaign in 2024.

President Biden has even considered using the 14th Amendment to avoid defaulting on the national debt, without having to compromise with Republicans to find a way forward. The decision is questionable, as courts will have to become involved to determine if Biden using the 14th Amendment is actually legal. Regardless of the possibility, it seems incredibly unlikely that Biden could pull it off before the looming June 1st deadline. Without having the time to allow the courts to determine the move’s legality, it seems as though Biden has no choice but to negotiate with Republicans.
