Ukraine Thwarts Assassination Scheme Of Zelenskyy

(NationalUSNews.com) — On Tuesday, May 7, the Ukrainian Secret Service announced that they had arrested two unnamed colonels in the Ukrainian State Security Department (SBU). The two men were involved in a plot to assassinate Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The SBU is the main organization tasked with protecting Zelenskyy. According to the report, the two colonels were part of a group of covert agents secretly working for Russia’s security service (FSB).

SBU chief Vasyl Maliuk and Military Intelligence boss Kyrylo Budanov were also targets. Maliuk was overseeing the top-secret operation tracking the plot. Part of the conspirator’s plan was to identify military personnel within Zelenskyy’s security detail who might be capable of abducting and assassinating the Ukrainian president. They were also monitoring the president’s movements and relaying this information to his enemies. It is believed they had already obtained the drones they were intending to use in a missile and drone strike to assassinate Zelenskyy.

President Zelenskyy said in 2022 that he had already survived at least ten assassination attempts. However, Artem Dehtiarenko, SBU spokesman, commented that this plot is the first time such high-ranking officials have been shown to be the “enemy’s moles.” Zelenskyy is integral to the Ukrainian war efforts, as he travels around his own country, urging his people to keep fighting. He also meets with the heads of other nations, advocating for aid and support in the fight for Ukrainian independence from Russia.

For his own protection, President Zelenskyy’s travel plans are kept secret until after he has already moved on to another location. Local news is not allowed to report on events he hosts or attends until after they are over. However, with what SBU officials have described as a “network of agents” undermining those security measures, more actions may need to be taken. There may be many more Russian-compromised personnel to be discovered. The White House press secretary, Karine Jean-Pierre, expressed the Biden administration’s relief that the assassination of President Zelenskyy was averted.
