Zelenskyy Visits Congress To Plead for Additional Aid

(NationalUSNews.com) — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited Capitol Hill on December 12th to plead for additional aid from Congress and the Biden administration. During Zelenskyy’s visit to the White House, President Biden assured him that the United States isn’t abandoning Ukraine and will still provide aid for Ukraine’s ongoing war with Russia. Zelenskyy also met with members of the Senate and the House of Representatives, including Speaker of the House Mike Johnson.

Zelenskyy’s visit comes after the Biden administration warned lawmakers that the aid allotted to Ukraine could be used by the end of December, forcing Ukraine to face Russia without assistance throughout the remainder of winter. The White House advocated for lawmakers to allot more aid to Ukraine to prevent Russia from gaining an advantage over the nation. Republicans in Congress aren’t allowing additional aid to pass into law and have prevented President Biden’s latest proposed aid package from being provided to Ukraine.

Zelenskyy’s latest visit failed to receive the same support as his December 2022 visit due to the prevalence of Republicans within the House of Representatives. Some Republican lawmakers believe the United States shouldn’t provide Ukraine with more aid due to the potential ramifications or retaliatory strikes from Russia. Despite these concerns, the Biden administration advocates for more aid and vocally supports Ukraine and Zelenskyy.

Zelenskyy initially planned on visiting American lawmakers on December 5th but canceled the meeting at the last minute due to an undisclosed incident. Zelenskyy intended to appeal to United States officials for aid during the meeting, but the discussions surrounding a potential aid package quickly fell apart. According to Ukrainian officials, without assistance from the United States, Ukraine will likely lose the war against Russia. Despite the appeal from Ukrainian officials, House Speaker Mike Johnson dismissed the requests for aid and criticized the Biden administration.

According to Johnson, the White House isn’t addressing Republicans’ concerns about providing aid to Ukraine. Johnson claims that a critical concern among Republican officials is the lack of a detailed strategy for Ukraine. Such a strategy would indicate how Ukraine uses its finances and how the Ukrainian military would repel a Russian offensive. Until Ukrainian officials reveal such details to members of Congress, additional aid to Ukraine is unlikely.
