Rubio Calls Far-Left Violence a Global Threat

He pointed to specific recent deaths he attributed to far-left attackers: a 72-year-old woman burned in Greece, an 83-year-old woman killed during a blackout attack in Berlin, and a 23-year-old man beaten to death in Lyon, France. He also claimed that 93% of terrorist attacks in the West between 1970 and 1980 were carried out by far-left groups, with around 2,500 bombings recorded by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in the U.S. in 1971 and 1972 alone.

Rubio also claimed far-left networks are not acting alone. He said some groups receive support from Iranian proxy networks and Cuba’s intelligence services. He pointed to a 40% rise in far-left violence in Germany and said more than 80% of radical violence in Greece comes from far-left or anarchist actors. New Designations, Rewards, and Visa Bans

The speech wasn’t just words. The Trump administration had already taken concrete steps. Researchers also noted the increase is driven largely by attacks on government and law enforcement targets.

Still, some analysts urge caution. The Lowy Institute noted that while left-wing incidents are climbing, they come from a very low starting point and remain far less deadly than right-wing or jihadist attacks. Critics from outlets like the BBC and Reuters described the administration’s framing as “contentious,” arguing that mainstream counterterrorism assessments have not historically ranked far-left groups among the top threats.
