That story — a sudden, dramatic switch — became central to her public identity.

The conversion story made for a compelling brand. Owens launched a YouTube channel called “Red Pill Black” and quickly rose to fame as a critic of Black Lives Matter and a supporter of Donald Trump. She partnered with Turning Point USA and became one of the loudest conservative voices aimed at Black Americans. Her message was simple: the left had failed them, and she was proof.

What the Archive Actually Shows

The problem is that some of the evidence does not fully match the story she tells. A Newsweek fact-check found archived posts from a blog Owens ran before her switch that included criticism of Trump and views that leaned left. That directly contradicts any claim that her values were “always conservative.” On top of that, she did not register as a Republican until October 2018 — well after she had already built her conservative platform.

She was also initially critical of Trump and the Republican Party before becoming one of MAGA’s biggest supporters. That early skepticism is hard to square with the idea that she was a natural conservative all along. The most honest reading of the record is the one she gave herself: she identified as liberal, something happened, and she changed. What remains murky is exactly when, and how completely.

Why the Timeline Gap Matters

There is no verified record — no dated social media posts, no interviews, no named witnesses — showing Owens held liberal views before 2015. Her account rests largely on what she has said about herself, looking back. That does not make it false. But it does mean the “always conservative at heart” version of her story has no real evidence behind it. The documented facts support a real conversion, not a rediscovery of values she always held.

By 2024, Owens had moved well beyond standard conservatism. The American Jewish Committee said she had gone from conservative commentator to someone promoting Holocaust denial. The Daily Wire cut ties with her after months of tension with Ben Shapiro. Her reach in mainstream conservative media shrank.
