NRA CFO Banned After Money Scheme

(NationalUSNews.com) — A non-profit fundraiser formerly of the National Rifle Association can’t raise money professionally for any non-profits for 10 years in New York state according to Attorney General Letitia James.

The NY AG’s office said Wilson Phillips (known as “Woody”) reached the settlement agreement in May after a jury said he was responsible for misuse of money at the NRA. At issue was the luxurious spending by former NRA chief executive Wayne LaPierre. Phillips, who ran the NRA’s finances, is accused of facilitating LaPierre’s jetsetter spending habits.

The details of this agreement were not made public until Monday, July 8.

The settlement stipulates that Phillips is barred for 10 years from acting as a finance manager for any non-profit in New Yok state. After that period expires, Phillips would have to undertake some sort of financial training if we wanted to work in this capacity again. Phillips is still responsible for paying $2 million in damages for helping LaPierre spend the NRA’s cash on items such as expensive vacations and rides on private jets and luxury yachts. He is also accused of covering up his role in the improper spending.

But at least he’s off the hook for the next part of the trial NY AG James is pushing against the NRA and its former leadership.

The list of improper actions alleged against Phillips was long. Prosecutors accused him of approving money for LaPierre to take a private plane to the Bahamas, helping money flow to contractors who were personal friends of LaPierre, and arranging for NRA money to pay off bills associated with LaPierre and his wife’s expenses for travel and makeup services.

The case starts up July 15, with Judge Joel Cohen in Manhattan presiding. At issue will be deciding if LaPierre and the NRA’s former general counsel, John Frazer, should also be banned for working for non-profits in New York state.

The first part of the trial wrapped up in February when a Manhattan jury found LaPierre guilty of misspending millions from the NRA’s treasury.
