(NationalUSNews.com) — After more than thirty years on the air, “The Simpsons” has often been cited as featuring remarkably accurate predictions about various topics like politics or international relations.
Over its historic runtime, the popular animated show has accurately predicted multiple issues, including who would hold the presidency and which celebrities would face scandals or criminal cases. The show’s writer, Al Jean, recently took to X, formerly Twitter, to celebrate the show’s various predictions and shared a prediction from an episode that aired 24 years ago.
Jean shared a picture of Lisa Simpson, one of the titular characters, wearing a purple suit with a pearl necklace. Jean posted a photo of Vice President Kamala Harris beside the screenshot of Lisa Simpson, which showed the vice president wearing the same outfit as the animated character. In the X post, Jean joked about accurately predicting another presidential candidate, claiming pride over the remarkably accurate depiction of American politics.
Jean pulled the screenshot from an episode aired in 2000, which also accurately predicted that former President Donald Trump would run for office and win the presidency. The episode’s plot centers around Lisa Simpson becoming the first female president of the United States, and throughout the episode, Simpson refers to several issues caused by the previous president, Trump. Among the problems listed by Simpson are a drastic increase in crime and a sharp decline in the United States budget.
Jean’s writing made national headlines in 2015, when Trump first announced his plan to run for the presidency. Many online commenters joked that Trump would win due to the episode, which featured numerous references to Trump’s time as the chief executive. Jean’s accurate prediction caused a surge of conspiracy theories around “The Simpsons,” which persist today. One of the episode’s writers, Dan Greaney, addressed the prediction and claimed that the show’s staff wanted to create an episode that warned about the sensationalizing of American politics.
Although many speculate that Harris won’t win the 2024 presidential election, some believe Jean’s prediction could be a positive omen for the vice president. President Joe Biden recently dropped out of the 2024 election, making Harris the presumptive nominee for the Democratic Party. Harris has since united the party’s various factions against Trump, and many political experts believe Harris has a better shot against Trump than Biden. Despite the influx of support for Harris, Trump remains the most popular candidate in the 2024 election and has started campaigning for demographics that traditionally vote Democratic.
