Homes of Interim Police Commissioner Searched

Recently, federal agents executed search warrants at the residences of Thomas Donlon, who was appointed as the interim police commissioner of New York City a week ago. Various materials were seized during these searches, which Donlon clarified were from approximately 20 years ago and unrelated to his police duties.

These searches are part of wider federal investigations that have put a spotlight on Mayor Eric Adams’ administration. Donlon has not disclosed which federal agency is leading the probe.

Broader Federal Investigations

The scrutiny extends beyond Donlon, encompassing other officials in Adams’ administration. Edward Caban, the previous police commissioner, resigned amid federal inquiries involving the seizure of his electronic devices. In his resignation letter, Caban described the investigations as having “created a distraction.”

“I hold immense respect and gratitude for the brave officers who serve this department, and the NYPD deserves someone who can solely focus on protecting and serving New York City, which is why—for the good of this city and this department—I have made the difficult decision to resign as Police Commissioner, “said Interim Police Commissionare Edward Caban.

Other top officials, including the head of public schools, David Banks, and his fiancée, Sheena Wright, had their phones seized. Additionally, Timothy Pearson, a senior advisor for public safety, also had his home raided.

Implications for Mayor Adams’ Administration

The federal investigations have not led to any charges against Donlon or other targeted officials. Mayor Adams has, however, faced repeated probes concerning potential corruption within his administration, including inquiries into his 2021 mayoral campaign and permits for a Turkish consulate.

“On Friday, September 20, federal authorities executed search warrants at my residences. They took materials that came into my possession approximately 20 years ago and are unrelated to my work with the New York City Police Department,” the statement said.

Additionally, Molly Schaeffer, director of the Office of Asylum Seeker Operations, and Brianna Suggs, a fundraiser for Adams, have also been subpoenaed or had their homes raided.
